THE MILLMERRAN SHEEP RACES

AUGUST 30, 2008

August 30 marked the day the Sheep Races were run and won at the 2008 Tourism Queensland Friendliest Town of the Year.  This brilliant idea was the brainchild of some of the St Joseph's Primary School parents back in 2004.  With this one being the fifth consecutive year running, the committee saw a huge rollup of both new spectators and the crowd that keeps coming back year after year.  Plenty of beer was ordered, the sheep were shorn and the jockeys strapped on!

An established social event, the Millmerran Sheep Races is a must on any social calendar.  It was awarded the 2007 Millmerran Community Event of the Year and with all the finest details tuned, the committee are expecting a huge roll up of avid race goers.

The sheep have been in training and punters will be keen to get the bidding started on the six-race program followed by the electrifying Calcutta.

This spectacular event sees the gates at Millmerran Showgrounds on Saturday, August 30 open at 11am with the first race scheduled for a 1pm start on a day of family fun.

All bases have been covered: the partygoer, to the betting man, to the family man and especially the cherubs with the most extensive entertainment to date; organisers know a day with the family means the whole family needs to be catered for. To make it impossible to resist, Millmerran Sheep Races is offering an economical alternative to having ones hand in the pocket when cherubs tap your leg by offering an affordable armband to cover all rides, all day including a gladiator challenge, kiddiepillar, chair o plane, jumping castle, merry go round and of course the bucking bull, just to name a few.

A super day needs super food therefore an extensive canteen and bar will be operating all day culminating in a succulent camp oven dinner.  If you need more, there will also be live performances by Tommy Lee Archer and Melissa Williams to dance the night away to. With plenty of powered camping sites at the showgrounds staying the night to recover is an option, but if camping is not your style we have listed all accommodation details for our area.

So come, have fun and enjoy the fact you will be supporting the Millmerran Sheep Races proudly brought to you by Elborne’s Tyres Millmerran. For further information you can contact 4695 7178 or 4695 6199

This spectacular aerial photograph of the Australian Camp Oven Festival held biannually at the Millmerran Showgrounds, shows how fortunate our community is to have such fabulous facilities and of course committees.  Over 5000 people converged on Millmerran in October to enjoy the 2006 festival and as you can see we have plenty of room to accomodate all campers.  To book a powered site for the Millmerran Sheep Races please call 4695 7178 or 4695 6199.
